The Spot Appliance discovers cameras through ARP broadcasts. Based on the ARP response, we can tell the manufacturer of the device. As ARP is a layer 2 networking protocol, for the Spot Appliance to be able to auto-discover a camera, they need to be in the same broadcast domain.
Once discovered and depending on the manufacturer, the Dashboard will list the devices and mark the identified ones as cameras. All other devices that aren't identified as cameras will still be listed but will be hidden behind a 'Show # Other Devices Found' button. Sometimes devices aren't identified due to various reasons, these devices can be found by clicking on the before-mentioned button.
